Amsterdam is one of the world's best hangouts, a canny blend of old and new:
radical squatter art installations hang off 17th-century eaves; BMWs give
way to bicycles; and triple-strength monk-made beer is drunk in gleaming,
minimalist cafes.

The
city seems to thrive on its mix and, despite hordes of tourists, still
manages to feel quintessentially Dutch. The old crooked houses, the cobbled
streets, the tree-lined canals and the generous parks all contribute to the
atmosphere. |

Amsterdam
is one of the greatest small cities in the world. From its canals to
world-famous museums and historical sights, Amsterdam is one of the most
romantic and beautiful cities in Europe.
Amsterdam is a city of tolerance and diversity. It has all the advantages
of a big city: culture, history, entertainment, international restaurants,
good transport - but is relatively small, quiet, and largely thanks to its
canals, has a little road traffic. In Amsterdam your destination is never
far away.
The Venice of the North, Amsterdam's attractions can read like a heady
cocktail in honour of a rock'n'roll lifestyle. Besides the famed red-light
areas where window-shopping takes on a whole new meaning and the coffee bars
that are more popular for their other wares, Amsterdam is also home to
hundreds of great bars and clubs. Style bars, cocktail bars, bistros,
restaurants and casinos - a night out in Leidseplein or Rembrandtplein will
lead you into the small hours. Oh, and if you want to rest your liver, don't
forget to visit the Van Gogh museum. more

Orientation
Amsterdam's centre is enjoyably small-scale, though finding your way
around the canal belt can be confusing. The old city is contained within the
ring of concentric canals dating from the 17th century that form the
crescent-shaped canal belt bordered by the Singelgracht. Think of it as half
a bicycle wheel: the medieval city around Centraal Station is the hub, and
several main roads, minor canals and the Amstel River function as spokes.
Dam Square, five minutes' walk south of the station, is the centre of
town, but there are several other happening 'centres', all within walking
distance: Leidseplein, with much of the city's cultural life and nightlife,
Rembrandtplein (nightlife), Spui ('intellectual' life) and Museumplein
(culture) are just some of the focal points that make the city a joy to
explore on foot or by bicycle.
Centraal Station, the central train and bus station, lies on the south
bank of the IJ. The airport at Schiphol is 18km (11mi) southwest of the city
centre.
Sail
Amsterdam
Every five years, enormous ships come to
Amsterdam and form a display of tall sail ships from all over the
world. Docked on the quays are over twenty so-called tall ships, and it
is not only possible to walk by all of them, most of them can be visited
as well.

Amsterdam tourist attractions and sights
Amsterdam has a broad spectrum of recreational and cultural sights that
range from fascinating old buildings, like the Oude Kerk, to oddities such
as the Hash Marihuana Museum. Museums are the main tourist attraction in
Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk
Museum, but there is much, much more. Amsterdam has over fifty museums which
attract many millions of visitors every year.
