Copenhagen
Scandinavia's largest city is lovely to just wander round. The narrow
streets with their gabled houses, cafes and shops are traffic free and
unpolluted. There's lots of green spaces and street music. The city has more
than 60 museums, including the National Museum, The Royal Museum of Fine Art
and Museum Erotica. The Experimentarium is good for hands on stuff. There's
a Copenhagen Card which covers admission to museums and other attractions
and includes free travel in the city.
Ribe
Denmark's oldest town is all cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. It
feels like a museum until you visit the real thing - Ribes Vikinger, with
its Viking ship and market place. There's also the Vikingecenter just
outside the town with reconstructions of how things used to be.
Odense
This is the birth place of fairy tale supremo Hans Christian Andersen.
It's a good place to stroll or cycle around with its excellent folk museum
and lots of live music. South of Odense, Egeskov Castle with its moat and
drawbridge has an excellent labyrinth made from bamboo. As well as its
sumptuous historic exhibits, the grounds house an antique car museum.
Legoland
Near the town of Billund is Denmark's most visited attraction with the
sort of models you always wanted to build but never got round to, including
a working model of the Port of Copenhagen made out of 3 million pieces of
Lego.
Christiansø
If you want to get away from it all, this is a good place to head for.
It's a small granite island which was a fortress in the 17th-century and
feels like it hasn't changed much since. There are no cars or modern
buildings. Cats and dogs are also banned which means it's a great place for
birds. You can see it all from the top of the old lighthouse.
Skagen
This fishing port of at the northern tip of Denmark has lovely beaches
and dunes. It attracts artists because of its unique light. You can see why
by taking a look at the paintings in the Skagens Museum. One of the largest
churches in the country Den Tilsandede Kirke or the Buried Church was here
until it had to be demolished because the sand dunes made it unusable. Its
tower remains as a landmark.
Århus
A university town with a lively atmosphere and good nightlife which sees
itself as the cultural capital of Denmark.
Silkeborg
Set on the banks of the Gudenå river, surrounded by forests and lakes
it's a popular holiday destination. The world's oldest paddle steamer is
used for river trips during the summer and there's lots of good walking,
horse riding and cycling. The 2,400 year old body of a man persevered in a
peat bog was found locally and is displayed in the town's museum.
