As the Lonely Planet guide says: “it is where the ancient and modern mix
furiously.” And the mixing sure is furious. When visitors first arrive in
the city, the first thing that they should be struck with is the hustle,
bustle and erratic madness of the city. The best way for visitors to explore
this fantastic chaos is to jump in a cab. By Western standards, taxis in
Cairo are relatively cheap and get travellers from A to B without the crush
of public transport. |

| Of course, one of the many things that visitors must do
when visiting Cairo is to pay their respects to Pharaoh Tutankhamen. His
present home, the Egyptian Museum, is always filled with visitors, so any
time will be best to see Tutankhamen’s gold death mask, the Royal Mummy
Room, and a wide range of treasures from the Egyptian past.
The Egyptian Museum is just the starting point for an exploration into
the mysteries of ancient Egypt. Visitors should travel to the outskirts of
the city to have a look at the sole survivor of the Seven Ancient Wonders of
the World – the Pyramids of Giza. The 4000 year old pyramids that loom over
the city are still awe inspiring and continue to prompt visitors to ask:
“how and why were they built?”
Also on the outskirts of the city is the Birqash Camel Market, which is
the largest of its kind in the country. While it is a male-dominated arena,
it is a place that is interesting for all parties to observe the many
transactions made throughout the day.
Coming back into the city, visitors will find a wide array of buildings,
mosques and museums centring on the Mohammed Ali mosque. This is area is
generally referred to as the Citadel. A highlight of this area is Saladin’s
imposing citadel on the mountaintop, where it is said that one of the best
views of Cairo can be seen from the top. This cluster of buildings is a
place where Jews, Arabs and Christians today live together, after a history
of violence and conflict, in relative harmony.
While it is hard to not be engulfed into Ancient Egypt while exploring
Cairo, it is just as easy to step out of it with the modern. One thing that
has been seen in this city in the recent years is the influx of shopping
centres like the Ramses Hilton Mall. There are also a plethora of night
clubs and places to party in this city.
But for more traditional shopping, there is an Egypt Crafts Centre that
sells fair trade items to generate income for Egyptians. It is a place where
arts and crafts, Bedouin rugs, traditional embroidery, and hand-made paper
are sold in a competitive market. It is just one of the more organised
bazaars that are spotted around the city.
The word ‘Cairo’ comes from the Arabic word “Triumphant” and it sure
lives up to its name. It is a city that does not just stand proudly
representing its grand and ancient past, but continues to do so for the
crazy fusion of everything that it is today. |
