The villages around Pezenas |
Castelnau de Guers
On a spur overlooking the Hérault valley, a medieval town named after the Barons
of Guers who dwelt in the feudal castle with a splendid view of the valley from
the terrace. Admire the fortress-like church of St Sulpice, built by the
Benedictines of St Thibéry, and beautifully preserved ancient houses. By the
river outside the village are three 13th c. mills. In the garrigue is the chapel
of St Nicolas de Tapulsiac, close by a strange place called the "Fairy rock", to
which erosion has given a moonlike appearance. Sample AOC Picpoul de Pinet on
many wine estates, a white wine praised by seafood lovers. website

Nézignan-l’Evêque
Once a Roman villa, then owned by the Counts of Béziers, Nézignan-l'Evêque was
taken over by the bishops of Agde in the 12th c. The best known who lived here
were François, then Louis, brothers of Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's financial
superintendent. A circle of houses surrounds the hillock of the old castle
demolished in 1749. The church is dedicated to St Mary Magdalene and its typanum
is listed. Stroll round the little streets (medieval houses) and "caminières",
paved paths beside the vegetable gardens. website

Aumes
On promontory overlooking the plain of the Hérault. Statue of Hermes, lion
sculpted in tuff, capital and funeral stele: remains of its past dating back to
the Iron Age. 13th c. church noted for its square chevet; splendid views. From
"Pioch du Télégraphe", view of chateaus of Marennes and St Martin. Perfect place
for ramblers. website |
Bessan
Small town of 4200 people away from the seaside resorts, set in ancient
vineyards between the Ramus hills and the Hérault. Many places to relax in and
aspects to charm lovers of history and folklore with a totemic ass, focus of the
St Laurent festival. Under Greek occupation from 6th c. BC, it is the oldest
site in France with Marseille. It was a Castrum (fortified village) in the
Middle Ages and now revolves round its historic centre with church of St Pierre
and Romanesque apse, St Pierre gate, 18th c; mansions and remains of a 13th c.
grain mill. Sample "Bessan Rosé" and award-winning vintages at the winery, and
other products of local gastronomy. website |
Florensac
On the left bank of the Hérault in Bas-Languedoc wine country, near the sea. Its
origins go way back and its name might come from "Fleur en sac" (flower in
sack). On the Via Domitia, its attractions include many vestiges of antiquity.
Stroll round its little streets 15th, 16th and 17th c. and 18th. c ancestral
homes, breathe in the fragrance of gardens, look inside the oddly asymmetrical
church of St-John the Baptist, and round it all off simply with a crisp, lively
glass of Picpoul, Ressac or dry Muscat! website |
Pomerols
A typical Languedoc wine-producing village with the advantages of both seaside
and countryside, Pomérols has managed to conserve its environment and its
friendliness. Added to its famed Picpoul wines, it also produces quality
chocolate and charcuterie. The facades of its 14th, 15th and 16th c. houses
reveal its eventful history. The church of St Cyr & Ste Julitte de Pomérols
(13th c.) has a listed 17th c. gilded Baroque altarpiece. website |
