| Kuala Lumpur is a treasure trove of golf clubs with
superbly interesting courses. Golfing in a single course would not do
justice to the avid golfer as each of the numerous courses have an identity
and playability of its own. For a true experience in golfing, grab your
clubs and Kuala Lumpur's great courses will provide you with the caddies!
Kuala Lumpur's Saujana Golf & Country was the venue for the US$910,000
Carslberg Malaysia Open Golf Championship from Feb 15 to 18 of 2001. The
regions richest championship's star appeal was provided for by three big
names in golf - US Masters champion Vijay Singh of Fiji, New Zealander
Michael Campbell and American John Daly.
Saujana is one of the 100 Best Golf Resorts in the world, and the best in
Malaysia; with two courses, the Palm Course and the Bunga Raya Course.
Doglegs, sand traps, water hazards, and cleverly placed pins add challenge
to the two championship golf courses.
The Palm Course, aptly dubbed "The Cobra" for its testing and challenging
layout, plays 6565 yards off the blue tees and 6959 yards from the black. It
has the most talked about greens in Malaysia, as putting on the greens is no
mean feat.
Bunga Raya Course or "The Crocodile" is about wide expanses of water and
undulating greenery with a terrific sense of freedom created by its clever
use of space. Although the course has not many ravines ands thick woods, it
is of medium length and looks deceptively easy. But it is really challenging
and has caused many to regret underestimating it.
Right in the midst of the Multimedia Super Corridor, and just beside the
renowned Commonwealth Stadium and Complex, Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort
is a mere quarter of an hour away from the city centre by car.
Sitting on 165 acres of testing undulating terrain, this 18-hole layout
was designed by Max Wexler and surrounded by fresh greenery. The course's
opening hole really lives up to its index rating of one. Golfers have to
carry the hillside tees across a lake to reach a narrow fairway.
Here, it is important to remember to make the carry line bolder to avoid
a very wet failure. But golfers need not despair as Bukit Jalil has a
well-lit practice range to facilitate the fine-tuning of their swings.
Kelab Golf Sentul Raya is one of the oldest clubs in Malaysia, dating as
far back as 1928. Chris Pitman and Douglas Lee re-designed its nine-hole
course in 1997, when the whole club underwent an extensive renovation.
Sentul Raya is conveniently on the northern edge of the city and is
opened to the public. It has a very tight and challenging layout with plenty
of water hazards and bunkers placing the onus on accurate shots, so take
care not to let the magnificent views of the city's skyline distract you!
In a valley high above Bangi, Bukit Unggul Country Club offers some of
the most spectacular sceneries and golfing in the Klang Valley. Carved out
of the natural terrain of valleys and hills, it is as unique as it is
eco-friendly, with the management imposing strict rules so as not to harm
the rainforest surrounding it.
Teeing off early in the morning is a superb experience as the cool mist
descends into the valley. Even the afternoon sun is not as harsh here,
thanks to Bukit Unggul's altitude. Maintenance has also done a good job of
the greens and fairways.
Bukit Unggul's most picturesque hole is Hole 10, dubbed the waterfall
hole. This par-5, 476m from the blue tee, plays to a dogleg left. Tee off in
front of a beautiful waterfall into a blind drop. The approach shot offers
the spectacular sight of slightly elevated greens surrounded by a ring of
trees.
The club's signature hole is at 375m, par-5, Hole 11; a breathtaking play
through a jungle valley with a series of decks and ridges leading to the
green. The putting surface is undulating and a bunker eagerly sits in wait
of hooked approach shots on the left. Par is an excellent score on this
hole.
This course is just perfect for those who want a challenge. Beginners may
lose a lot of balls, but the scenery and setting is a boon. Bukit Unggul's
other facilities include the nine-hole night golfing, a pro-shop and putting
green.
There are a pair of lovely courses at the Pan Pacific Glenmarie Resort,
both designed by Max Wexler, but separately called the Garden and Valley
Courses. The Garden Course is the longer of the two, with 7017 yards, par 72
from the back tees, but there are also various tees to accommodate golfers
of all skill levels.
Due to its length, buggies are mandatory for play. The Garden Course is,
happily for night golfers, floodlit. Do remember that as most of the course
actually wanders around two main lakes, there are bound to be plenty of
water hazards on many holes.
The 6896 yards, par 72 Valley Course features a tremendous amount of
water, especially at the 549 yard downhill par 5, fourth where crossing a
diagonal stream with your second shot is of utmost importance in order to
approach an island green.
Located amidst the beautiful hilltop setting of the lush undulating
greenery of Bukit Kiara the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club is well served
by major roads and is easily accessible from Kuala Lumpur City centre
Petaling Jaya Shah Alam Klang and the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in
Subang.
The club popularly known as KLGCC has two 18-hole golf courses. The West
Course the more difficult of the two is of true championship quality and
puts a premium on long accurate drives and precision in the short game. The
varying elevations of its holes add to the challenges its golfers will face
in trying for pars and birdies.
The East Course the shorter of the two also features holes with different
elevations but they are less severe and generally the course offers golfers
among the higher handicapped a fairer chance to score from the white tees.
The Golf Course
1. West Course
The West Club is exclusively for members and their guests. The Club has
an 18-hole golf course, golfers' lounge, buggy station, VIP and changing

championship course requires precision golf, especiallywith its long and
undulating terrain and new bunkers with its fine sand. The West Course has
established a reputation as "the thinking golfer's course". Concentration
and strategy is the key.
2. East Course
The East Club has its own 18-hole course, golfers' lounge, buggy station,
VIP and changing rooms and car park. For golfers who want to enjoy the green
and serene at a lighter pace, there is leisurely East Course. Casual golfers
favour this course for its fair play amidst very pleasant and harmonious
landscaping. The greens are a visual delight for golfers seeking respite and
peace. Notable holes include the spectacular Par 3, 141m, hole #7.
A truly arresting golfing experience, playing a round at the Titiwangsa
Golf Club PDRM is a great way to have an enjoyable time. Designed by Ng Ah
Bey and other police personnel, this is a 36-par, nine-hole golf course that
spans over 3,055 metres.
The course provides the casual golfer an opportunity to extend themselves
on some of the more challenging holes. There are also driving-range
facilities which are available. A caddy is also available for the nine
holes.
