This wonderful group of islands is divided into Gimnesias (Mallorca, Menorca
and Cabrera) in the North, and Pitiusas (Ibiza y Formentera) in the
South-West.
Their excellent climate with some 300 days of sun per year, wonderful
beaches, a rich cultural offer and the unusual hospitality of their
inhabitants make
Balearic Islands one of the preferred holiday destinations
in Spain. There are more passengers at the
airport of Palma de Mallorca than
at the airport of any other Spanish city. Hardly anybody who has spent
holidays here didn't wish to return, in fact, many visitors have made the
islands their permanent home. Each of the islands has a strong personality
all of its own, and each of them offers much more but the possibility to
spend nice holidays at the beach ...
Play some rounds of golf ...
Mallorca has an extensive range of beautiful golf courses. There are 15
courses in total dotted all over Majorca. With the all year round weather no
wonder it has become one of the top destinations for a golfing holiday!!
There are 2 golf courses on the Island of Ibiza, both located in the county
of Santa Eularia, they are currently merging to make one large complex. |
Mallorca
Mediterranean Lady
This elegant island has to offer anything a visitor might dream of.
Tourism at Mallorca started to develop already in the 1920s, and until the
Spanish Civil War it was mainly intellectuals and artists who were attracted
by this island.
Mallorca's wonderful climate, beautiful landscapes as well as its
cosmopolitan ambience make it a privileged holiday resort, with a cultural
offer comparable to the one of many European capitals. The Auditiorio de
Palma, for instance, ranks among Europe's top concert halls. At Mallorca,
you will find relaxation, inspiration, culture and entertainment ...
Menorca
The Windy Island
Legend tells that the winds of Menorca modify the personality of people.
Maybe that is the reason why those who came here once as tourists mostly
return ... Menorca certainly has a very strong personality, and a very
different one to the rest of the islands. Menorca, the "minor" island, as it
was called by Romans, has an almost virginal interior (compared for instance
to the "major" island, Mallorca) and shows interesting remains of its old
history. On the other hand, there are beaches and lonely bays around it at a
length of 216 kilometers. An ideal resort for all those who are looking for
true relaxation.
Ibiza
The White Island
- The two most remarkable aspects of Ibiza —biodiversity and
culture— lead to its declaration of World Heritage Site by the United
Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO).
The Carthaginians were the ones who founded the ancient Ibosim, back in
654 B.C. In little more than a century, the city became a strategic colony
in the western Mediterranean. Ebusus during the Roman Empire and later named
Yebisah under Muslim rule, the island came under the rule of King Jaume I
after the Reconquest, in 1235. The continuous pirate sieges lead to the
construction of a wall to fortify the city, in the 16th century.
Presently, the city is divided into Sa Penya, known as "ciudad baja"
(lower city) and Dalt Vila, a monumental area located on the higher part of
the city, declared World Heritage Site. Dalt Vila is surrounded by well
preserved Renaissance walls, built by King Carlos V, which served as a model
for walls and fortresses in the New World. The considerable height of its
bastions provides a gorgeous view to the city and the port under it.
The cuisine of Ibiza combines a wide repertoire of Balearic
specialties
with those native to the island. So, pork products take the centre stage, an
excellent example being "sobrasada", a spread made with minced meat and
cured with spices. Also typical is the "tumbet" (a baked dish with peppers,
aubergine and potatoes) and the rice dishes with fish. For dessert, you can
choose between the famous "ensaimada" (a spiral-shaped bun, with powdered
sugar), the cheese with the label Designation of Origin - Mahón and the
frígola of Ibiza, one of the many dessert wines that are produced in the
Balearic Isles.
The island of Ibiza can be visited in its entirety, taking the capital as
a starting point. A few kilometres northeast is the town of
Santa Eulària
des Riu, with its Roman cemetery and a church located on top of Puig de
Missa. Further ahead is
Portinatx, tourist centre with beautiful coves and
an authentic fishing town atmosphere. Lastly, Sant Antoni de Portmany has
some of the best western beaches, in addition to being a lively and exciting
spot in the island.
If you leave the beaches behind you to explore the island's interior, you
will find a pure and simple Mediterranean culture, and remains of
populations which inhabited Ibiza thousands of years ago, as for instance
the famous wall-paintings of Ses Fontelles.

Formentera
Pitiusa Paradise
This small island, with a surface of 90 squ.km. and some 5200
inhabitants, is located 11 miles from the south-eastern coast of Ibiza. The
sea is visible from practically any point of the island, and there are
numerous great beaches and lonely bays, some of them with incredible
grottos.
Its favorised climate, with springtime temperatures during almost all the
year, its rich vegetation of pines as well as palms, and its quiet and

Cabrera
Virgin Nature
When you visit Cabrera, which is located just face to face to Mallorcas
southern coast, and its lonely beaches, you will really feel like Robinson
Crusoe. Cabrera was declared nature preserve in 1991, since then access is
controlled by the Spanish National Institute for the Conservation of Nature.
