Murcia is characterized by its old history of commerce and agriculture.
Already its original inhabitants, Iberian tribes, established commercial
relations with Phoenicians and Greeks. Lateron it became first a
Carthaginean colony, then a Roman colony. (Carthago Nova, today's Cartagena
still reminds of that fact). The Moors established effective and modern
agricultural production, which still today is an important economic factor,
thanks to their advanced technologies.
Of major tourist interest is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa
Calida ("the warm coast"), with beaches of fine sand. The salt-water lagoon
Mar Menor and La Manga del Mar Menor offer great possibilities for water
sports. The inland is almost deserted, and you may visit several towns which
still preserve their medieval structures.
Typical cooking includes stews, salads, roasted meat, rice, and of course
great sea-food along the coast. Murcia also produces wine of high quality.

The Cities
Murcia
The capital of the region, located inland.
Two seas in a single coast (Menor and Mediterranean Seas), impressive cliffs
and lonely beaches of endless and white sea, noisy harbours and savage
creeks of crystal clear creeks, more than 3,000 hours of Sunlight and mild
temperatures, even in winter, with an annual average temperature of more
than 18oC. This is the Costa Cálida (Warm Coast), an ideal destination to
spend unforgettable resting days either in winter or summer.
From the fishing village of Águilas to the white dunes of the beach of El
Mojón, in San Pedro del Pinatar, we find many kilometres of beaches and
lonely creeks waiting for the swimmers, sailors, fishermen and scuba-divers.
Besides, there are lovely and picturesque fishing villages like La Azohía or
Cabo de Palos, where you can get lost for a few days; harbours like Mazarrón
to spend a funny night and taste the magnificent gastronomy after a day at
the beach; natural paradises, uniques in the Mediterranean, at the same
level of beaches like Calblanque and Calnegre … and one of the most
appreciated tourism places in the Mediterranean Sea: the Manga del Mar Menor,
a paradise between two seas, with endless beaches of sand bottoms and
crystal clear waters, provided with a magnificent hotel infrastructure.

Cartagena sits on the Costa Calida within Murcia. Despite the
scruffy views as you enter the city, you will find within, a wealth of
history and beautiful architecture. If you explore the port area you will

and throughout the city, the importance of the port will become evident with
numerous buildings belonging to the navy, as well as a good naval museum.

La Manga, A Paradise Between Two Seas
La Manga is situated in the
Province of Murcia in a coastal area which boasts one of the most moderate
climates in Spain, with more days of sunshine than other mainland areas and
water temperatures higher than average. As a result it has become known as
the "Costa Calida" - the "Warm Coast". It is a strip of sand, approx. 22kms.
long, which forms a "barrier" and encloses the "Mar Menor" (Minor Sea) and
separates it from the "Mar Mayor" (the Mediterranean). At it's narrowest
